South Carolina SBDC

Defense Economic Transition Assistance (DETA)

FACT SHEET

The DETA program is funded by the US Small Business Administration (SBA) and administered by the Frank L. Roddey Small Business Development Center program (SCSBDC) to provide a broad range of services that include business technical assistance, government contracting and other services for businesses affected by base closings, Dept. of Defense policy changes affecting technology companies and military force restructuring caused by the war on terrorism and other international conflicts.

The SC DETA program is focused on any individual or firm(s) impacted by defense related issues to include Homeland Security. The SC SBDCs DETA plan orients on the traditional businesses impacted by government action, industry sectors adversely affected by War on Terrorism and the SC National Guard, and Reserve military components. In SC, the apparel and textile industry has been severely impacted by world events. The DETA effort attempts to assist in rebuilding this sector in SC by enhancing competitiveness and supply chain activity. These enhancements will foster more competitive action in government procurement and have the affect of saving and creating jobs as well as save this industrial base. DETA action will preserve the industrial base and add to national security.

The other focus of the SC DETA plan is assisting the SC National Guard and Reserve organizations. These men and women and their employers are impacted by recent DoD force restructuring. Extended deployments will continue in the foreseeable future and will continue to have a detrimental impact on employers as well as employees now serving in the units.

The SC SBDC in conjunction with its partners provides consulting and business assistance to most individuals and businesses economically impacted by recent world events. If you would like to determine if you qualify for this assistance and want more information, please contact tile nearest SC SBDC office at http://scsbdc.moore.sc.edu/areaoffices.html
